Kenny Tran spent two decades perfecting his craft in the backyard before Garden Grove got to taste it. The Smoking Ribs is what happens when a lifelong obsession finally finds a front door.
The backyard obsession
Starting in 1999, Kenny Tran spent years tending smokers, testing rubs, and feeding anyone who'd show up. It was never a hobby — it was a calling that kept getting harder to contain.
A strip mall, a massive smoker
Kenny opened in a Garden Grove strip mall on Euclid Street — deep in Little Saigon, a neighborhood built on pho. He put a giant smoker right in the open kitchen and let the smoke do the talking.
The food that converts people
Pork ribs, tomahawk steak, and blueberry cornbread — 25+ years of craft on every plate. We open at noon and serve until we're sold out.
What the press found
OC Weekly called The Smoking Ribs "the future of OC barbecue." The Los Angeles Times came to tell the story. Guests now drive in from Irvine, Huntington Beach, and even Las Vegas — and the refrain is always the same.
Kenny still shakes your hand
The setting is modest — that's intentional, or at least fitting. Kenny comes out from behind the counter to meet the people eating his food, and first-timers leave already planning their next visit.
